I prefer the word " useful" as purpose sounds too serious & anxiety creating if I don't have an "important" purpose. I do volunteer work & feel useful to that organisation along with other activities & exercise to fill my days.
Filling the cracks with purpose has been the hardest part of retirement for me. I try things (choir, book club, lunches, crochet, mosaic) that I give up or continue, but the main staples of gym, travel, family, reading and volunteering give me a routine that works. I’m lucky that my voluntary role with a charity I founded gives me a lot of purpose and reward.
